Prerequisite Modules:

Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is part of the MA programme in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA TESOL) and offers practice in design and delivery of language teaching in a real language teaching classroom. This is complemented by feedback from supervisors, experience in self-reflection, and critical observation of teaching by experienced teachers. The module is based on developing confident, competent and self-aware language teachers. As this module is an elective that is offered in both Autumn and Spring semesters, it is the same as module TP5912.

Syllabus:

This module is practice-based and consists of: observation of English language classes taught by experienced teachers; Teaching Practice (TP) preparation sessions facilitated by a lecturer; and TP with classes of international students on campus. TP classes are supervised by a lecturer and recorded for review by the trainee. Teaching practice reflection involves self-evaluation (of teaching, lesson planning etc.), face-to-face feedback sessions with the supervising lecturer and written graded feedback from the lecturer.

Learning Outcomes:

Cognitive (Knowledge, Understanding, Application, Analysis, Evaluation, Synthesis)

On successful completion of this module students should be able to: - Plan and prepare language classes appropriate to different groups' language levels based on suitable language teaching materials; - Use a variety of teaching aids (e.g. audio-visual equipment, whiteboards, coursebook material, etc.) during language classes; - Apply linguistic and pedagogic perspectives to the lesson planning and teaching process; - Deliver interactive language classes in authentic and/or simulated language teaching situations; - Evaluate language teaching in structured and constructive ways; - Apply teaching practice feedback proactively to subsequent planning and preparation, delivery and reflection.

Affective (Attitudes and Values)

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: - Learn from and build on experience and observations of language teaching; - Demonstrate a capacity for self-reflection and self-evaluation based on experiencing and applying supervisors' and other colleagues' feedback constructively; - Develop an appreciation of the multiple contexts of language teaching and English language teaching as a profession.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The learning experience of the student in this module is strongly practical and consists of teaching practice preparation sessions led by a lecturer, observation of English language lessons taught by experienced teachers, and teaching international students on campus. These lessons are supervised by a lecturer and recorded for review by the trainee. Teaching practice reflection involving self-evaluation and critical reflection, and feedback sessions with the supervising lecturer. As part of the module assessment, at the end of semester, students are required to compile and present a teaching practice portfolio containing lesson plans, self-reflections, supervisor feedback forms and accounts of observations of experienced teachers. The nature of the module is that it is developmental, observation and experience contribute to the apprenticeship of new language teachers, and progression for those with experience. Findings from current pedagogic and linguistic research are implicated in the planning and preparation processes, trainee reflections on classroom practices, their own and others', and supervisors' feedback.
